Some restless, disorganizing nullifiers, or disunionists, having failed of accomplishing the objects they anticipated from the excitement about the Tariff, are now attempting to create a new and still more dangerous excitement by stirring a question which will not bear agitation in our country. The seeds of discord are most artfully and insidiously sown, by representations—unfounded as we believe—in regard to the wishes and designs of our Northern brethren, well calculated to alarm and drive to desperation the people of the South and West. Because a few enthusiasts, possessing no character or personal influence at home or abroad, have written and declaimed about natural and inherent rights and put in circulation incendiary publications, condemned by all good citizens in every quarter of the Union, in regard to the evils and dangers of slavery, the disorganizers above referred to, whom we regard as scarcely less base and detestable than Garrison, Lundy, Dennison, and their followers, would fain create the belief that the mass of the people, or at least a respectable and powerful portion of them, in the northern states, are disposed to interfere with the domestic relations of the south, and to attempt directly or indirectly to destroy the spirit of order and subordination which is so essential to our security and happiness. The danger is, that by mutual irritation, the state of things now falsely represented as existing, may be brought about, and that the people of the North and of the South may, without the deliberate intention of either, be thrown into collision and gradually rendered more and more hostile, through the intervention of a few desperadoes and men without character on both sides. We hope the good sense, prudence, and patriotism of the editorial corps of all parties, and of the men of influence and standing in all parts of the Union, will prevent the fatal consequences to be feared from such inflammatory and irritating misrepresentations. Much depends upon the editors of newspapers. It is in their power to excite or to assuage the popular feeling, and to create or prevent that mutual alienation of the different sections of the country, so hazardous to the stability and perpetuity of our Union. There is no reason to believe that any respectable citizens at the North have any disposition to interfere with the local regulations and institutions of the South, and it is certain that no sincere friend of the Union will recommend such interference, or encourage the belief of the existence, to any considerable extent, of a disposition to recommend it. Let there be no discussion on the subject. Let it be carefully and uniformly avoided, and let those who unnecessarily and impertinently agitate the question, be treated with the indifference and contempt they merit.—Nashville Banner.
