I. A. Dexter and Dr. Douglass went fishing for trout but encountered three large mountain lions, a lioness, and two whelps. From the Wild and Wooly West.

I. A. Dexter, formerly of this place, who is now in Longmont, Colo., has many friends here who have heard him tell stories, and who will be interested in the following story about him which was printed in the Longmont Daily Call of June 5.

"I. A. Dexter and Dr. Douglass, to be in the fashion, went fishing for trout the other day. They are both truthful gentlemen, and so exaggeration is not expected. They each admit that they didn't get a bite. The strange part of the trip is that they encountered three large mountain lions, and a lioness and two whelps. They had a desperate struggle, in which they came out first best." Being out fishing, they had no fire arms, and therefore could not shoot the beasts. After fighting hand to hand for an hour, Dexter thought of his fishing rod, which he ran down the throat of the mother lion. They each then grabbed a whelp by the tail and started home with them. The story accounts for their clothes being so badly torn, though Charley Bradford, who lives west of Lyons, says they tore them crawling through the barbed wire fence."
