College Station.—North Carolina is far from being amply supplied with home-produced, quality poultry on a year-around basis, T. T. Brown, extension poultryman of State College, said today.

Pointing out further defects, he said also that the supply of real high-quality fryers is not steady and ample in many sections of the State.

This proves, he continued, that although the poultry industry of North Carolina has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, there is still a bad case of underproduction.

Other than their lower grain prices, large poultry-producing areas in the Mid-West and in California are no more favorably situated for economical poultry production than is North Carolina. These two areas now furnish Eastern cities with large supply of poultry and eggs.

An expanded production in North Carolina, with emphasis on quality, could capture much of this prize market as well as furnishing a steadier supply to home markets, the State College poultryman said.

"Records kept on demonstration flocks throughout the State prove that poultry can be raised profitably in North Carolina," Brown said. "Of course, these flocks were fed and managed properly and were selected from high-producing stock. Yet any farmer could repeat the success that demonstration poultrymen have enjoyed."

underproduction of quality poultry and fryers; potential for profitable expanded production and market capture.

Event Details

T. T. Brown notes insufficient year-round supply of home-produced quality poultry in North Carolina, unsteady high-quality fryers in many areas, and overall underproduction despite industry growth. Mid-West and California areas supply Eastern markets due to lower grain prices but North Carolina is comparably situated. Expanded quality production could secure markets and steady home supplies. Demonstration flocks show profitability with proper management and stock selection, replicable by any farmer.
