HOW ABOUT IT
MR. FERGUSON
Will you tell your friends on Vashon Island why it is impossible to find out anything about the vote in the 40th Legislative district on representatives from your office? This article is written Thursday evening, about two days since the polls closed. The vote between John A. Soule and P. Monroe Smock is conceded to be close. You have tabulated in your office, about 1,500 votes, while this paper has already more than twice that number tabulated. This paper's tabulation shows P. Monroe Smock about 60 votes ahead of John A. Soule, with only a few small scattering precincts not included to report.
It is true the election board is composed of Mr. Colvin, William A. Gaines, and yourself--all three political opponents of both the editor of this paper and Frank I. Paul. It isn't so much what Frank Paul and the editor of this paper think--but it concerns as vitally the 373 voters on Vashon Island who cast their vote for P. Monroe Smock.
The election board must be, like Caesar's wife, above suspicion. You have already tabulated the Seattle constables, and this paper would like to know if the office of State Representative isn't almost as important as that of precinct constable? It's true this paper supported Sparger for commissioner against you, Mr. Ferguson, and Bill Gaines. This paper also supported George A. Grant for your successor, while you were for Mr. Wisner. Now please tell us why you are holding back any report on the vote for State Representative from the 40th district. If John A. Soule got more votes than the editor of this paper, then he is entitled to the nomination. But by every legal right at the command of this paper, if Smock got a majority of the votes last Tuesday, he intends to demand his certificate of nomination, if it takes every friend he has on Vashon Island to join with him in demanding what are his just and legal rights.
