The United States revenue cutter Crawford has been assigned to special duty, besides the regular duty of guarding the Florida coast to prevent smuggling, that of patrolling the exposed portion of the Gulf coast and preventing vessels from Key West from landing persons on the mainland without observing the regulations. The Crawford is a side-wheel steamer of 250 tons, and is 163 feet long, carrying a crew of thirty-six men all told. All of her work in connection with marine hospital service is done in addition to her regular revenue duties. Since her connection with this service she has spoken and boarded about 150 vessels, a small number of which have been sent to the refuge station at Egmont Key. The vessels are boarded, and if any sickness is found they are at once taken to the station at Egmont. The duty is quite hazardous, by contact with yellow fever on the vessels, as the vessel is liable to become infected.
