From the (Trenton) True American.
Jefferson and Liberty,
A NEW SONG, FOR MARCH 4th, 1802.
BARE STUMP
Tune—'Anacreon in Heaven.'
That JEFFERSON rose to the Chair of the Nation;
With rapture the Statesman and Patriot survey,
The man of your choice, and your Freedom's Salvation.
And long may you find
His immutable mind.
The foe of all Tyrants, and friend of mankind;
And ne'er may the sons of Columbia deplore
The loss of their Freedom, till time is no more.
When fate the great WASHINGTON call'd to the skies
Exulting Arch-angels, the Hero surrounding.
Bade weeping Columbia refrain from her sighs—
'Lo JEFFERSON lives!' from the heavens resounding.
She heard the glad strain—
Heav'n echo'd again,
'He lives, and your Charter of Rights—will maintain,
And ne'er shall the sons of Columbia deplore
The loss of their freedom till time is no more.'
Again should proud Europe, in laughter con-'bin'd;
With horrors of War, fill the world with commotion;
Or Tyrants endeavor to butcher mankind,
Whelm nations in gore, and encrimson the ocean,
Columbia! thy name,
The trumpet of fame
Shall sound thro' all regions, our rights to proclaim;
And ne'er shall the sons of Columbia deplore
The loss of their freedom, when time is no more.
May the gleam of our arms, like the beams of the sun,
Dispel the dark clouds of all future invasion;
Should slavery essay to rear tyrants a throne,
Or anarchy whelm in confusion the nation,
Our freedom to save,
The swords of the brave
MONTGOM'RY and WARREN, would leap from the grave:
And ne'er shall the Sons of Columbia deplore
The loss of their freedom, when time is no more.
The blood of your Heroes has purchas'd the prize
Of liberty, glory, and rich Independence:
The shades of your fore-fathers beam from the skies,
In smiling complacency, on their descendants;
The blood of each wound
Cries aloud from the ground,
'O ne'er let a foe to your freedom be found,
And ne'er shall the sons of Columbia deplore
The loss of their freedom till time is no more.'
