Full Text
The Connecticut Herald takes the esteemed Waterbury American to task for advocating the re-election of Senator Platt in 1891, and makes a fair point when it claims that the American is entirely inconsistent, owing to the senator's avowed antagonism to its position on the tariff question, in advocating his re-election. As Mr. Platt's "influence and strength in national legislation" has been invariably directed to the maintenance of a war tariff which was repudiated last fall by the voters of the state, and which has received the repeated disapproval of the American, it is somewhat difficult to reconcile its present attitude in urging his re-election. Perhaps, however, it is the result of its straddle-the-fence policy which leads it to throw a sop of its distinguished approval wherever it believes such a course is casting bread on the waters. As a straddler the American is a most successful success.
