The Philharmonic.--We received by post last night a very polite invitation to meet with the gentlemen who are zealous for the formation of a Philharmonic Society here--at the Methodist Church (on Monday to-morrow) evening.
Now this invitation we are not vain enough to misinterpret as a compliment to our voice, nor yet to our ear, (though a compliment,--to its size,--we flatter ourselves might with propriety be bestowed upon the latter of these gifts of ours,) but, rather, is intended as a gentle and clever hint to us to say something, here, which may serve to remind everybody who needs reminding, of the meeting aforesaid.
Now the fact is it really matters but little whether our bassoon be utilized to this projected society of vocalists: but if we don't give them the benefit of our voice, at least we will lend them such encouragement as can be had in these columns.
There is always hope for a town that has amateur theatricians and singing clubs. Music is the food of love: melody hath charms to soothe the Washoe breast: song and dance and such lightsome amusements drive dull care away and neutralize a vast volume of superfluous cussedness.
Therefore we say with emphasis, success to this Philharmonical enterprise.
