H. M. Hyams, H. St. Paul, and D. D. Withers, Democratic candidates for the State Senate from the Parish of New Orleans, at the late election in Louisiana, and who were declared defeated, have declared their intention of contesting the elections, and set forth in their notice of contest that,
"At the ninth precinct there was a large majority of votes given in our favor; to wit: 131, but which votes were not returned in our favor by the commissioners, because they were illegally hindered and forcibly prevented from perfecting the count of said votes, by the violent and illegal acts of a band of lawless men, who seized the votes and destroyed the ballot-boxes with their contents."
This is the manner in which the K. N. party carry elections in States where the party has not become abolitionized. Hardly an election has passed, since their organization, at which they have not perpetrated violence upon the ballot box, or excited the mob to violence and murder. This is the natural effect of their secret, mutual assistance organization, into which the cowardly, corrupt and bad-hearted have engrafted themselves for the purpose of shielding themselves from their enormities. Never until the organization of this lying and corrupt party, were our elections disgraced by such scenes of violence and blood shed. With them the law is of no consequence, and the ballot box—the bulwark of American freedom—is held as naught, unless it turns out majorities for the secret oath-bound party. They have been organized for the purpose of controlling the elections, and even where there is majorities against them the power over their peaceable and law-abiding citizens, and ballot boxes fall to pieces before them, and if law-abiding citizens interfere, murder is added to the crime committed on election days. How long will men who of intelligence continue to advocate the claims of a party whose very organization purposely fits them for the violation of law, and outrage those who are not with them in sentiment and opinion? How long will such a party find men sunk sufficiently low, and so regardless of truth and common honesty, as to call it the pure American party? How long can men remain connected with such a lawless organization, and maintain a character as a respectable and law-abiding citizen? Although a hundred political battles have been fought, it has been left for the patriotic K. N.'s to disgrace American elections, by the destruction of ballot-boxes, violence and blood-shed.
