MYSTERY IN HIS DEATH

Had $500, Only 10 Cents Left When Body is Found

Greenwood, Dec. 30.--After examining several witnesses today a coroner's jury took a recess until Saturday morning in the investigation into the death of Arthur Bates, thirty-five, of Philadelphia, formerly of Greenwood, whose body was found on the banks of a small stream six miles east of town yesterday by three boys while rabbit hunting. A physician who performed an autopsy testified that death could have been caused by apoplexy. Bates came here with his wife Monday and is said to have brought $500 in cash. Only ten cents was found in his pockets. His wife said he had planned to visit his father in Saluda county yesterday.
