OF THE LAW AND GOSPEL
1. Think not that I am come to destroy the Law or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. — Mat. 5:17.
2. And it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunders, and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. — Exod. 19:16.
3. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire, and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace and the whole mount quaked greatly. — Ibid. 18.
4. And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount. — Ibid. 20.
5. He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. — Psalms 18:9.
6. And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake. — Heb. 12:21.
With such an appearance of the holy and almighty God, were the Commandments given to the Jews, six hundred thousand men trembling for fear, and begging that "God would not speak to them lest they die." — Exod. 20:19. But O faithful Christian!
7. Ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words; but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable number of Angels, to the general assembly and church of the first born which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, & to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. — Heb. 12:18, 21 to 24.
8. See (therefore) that ye refuse not him that speaketh: for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: but serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: for our God is a consuming fire. — Ibid. 25, 28, 29.
9. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? — Jer. 23:29.
10. The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. — John 1:17.
11. Wherefore as the Holy Ghost saith, To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, but exhort one another daily, while it is called to day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin: for we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end. — Heb. 3:7, 8, 13, 15.
