Full Text
Gen. Taylor in Cincinnati.
The following extract of a letter from a lady residing in Cincinnati to her friend in Boston, well illustrates the heartfelt enthusiasm with which the old hero is received wherever he goes:-
"General Taylor was here last week, on his way to Washington, and was most enthusiastically received. He was escorted through all the principal streets and followed by crowds of people who were continually stopping the carriage to shake hands with him. The dear old man! I love him with all my heart. I could not help crying like a great baby for joy, and hurrahed as loudly as any of them. It was a bitter cold day, and the old man rode with his hat off all the time. It was amusing to hear the various remarks made by the crowd. I happened to be standing in a window by the side of a very loquacious old lady, who was in a perfect agony lest 'the dear old man,' as she called him, should take cold. There was so much noise I could not hear all she said, but once in a while I could catch the words 'rheumatism,' inflammation on the brain,' 'sore throat,' &c., and finally she wished some one had thought enough to tell him to put some cotton wool in his ears!"
