FOR THE NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER.
Messrs. Editors.--This day, about 5 o'clock, as several persons were passing along the Pennsylvania Avenue, between Mr. Leonard's and the bridge over the Tiber, they narrowly escaped being shot by a careless fellow, who was sporting with his gun on the south side of the canal. The shot passed close by two of the persons and struck the loose part of the garment of another person, who called out to the sportsman, but without effect--for he loaded and fired again at something, soon after they had passed.
Now, gentlemen, this is an enormity that calls loudly for a corrective; and, if it be allowed to continue, no one can pass the streets and avenues of the Metropolis in safety. It is well known, that raw sportsmen take little heed of any thing but their game, and, when they fire, are thoughtless of danger to others--and, therefore, in most populous places, regulations are made very strict against discharging fire-arms, at all seasons. But, what sort of a sportsman can he be, who pursues the poor birds at this season? It may not be amiss to publish the existing regulation against this silly practice. This is by no means a solitary case.
