Graham Enters Tokar and is Received with Enthusiasm.
Granville Declines to Talk Much About British Intentions, but Says the Troops Will Not Withdraw.—Dynamite.
Cairo, March 4.—After his signal victory over the rebels under Osman Digna, at the wells of Teb, Gen. Graham advanced rapidly on the town of Tokar, reaching that place by Saturday noon. But a few shots were exchanged with the rebels who were holding the town, and then as the British square advanced the enemy fled to the mountains, pursued by the hussars, who kept up a continual skirmish with the fugitives.
The garrison of Tokar was found to be in a most pitiable plight. The inhabitants were in a most miserable condition, and the soldiers hostile to the Arabs all in chains. From the people it was learned that the rebels had been in possession of the town since Feb. 6. A portion of the garrison was sent back to Trinkitat and the fortifications forthwith blown up. The remains of Morice Bey, Surgeon Leslie, and four other Europeans who were killed at the time of Baker Pasha's defeat were buried with the customary military honors in the captured city.
The people of Tokar kissed Gen. Graham's hands as he entered the town, and there were great rejoicings. The enemy acknowledged that 1,500 of their number were killed. The following map shows the locality of the recent operations of Gen. Graham. Teb, where Graham met and defeated Osman Digna, is nine miles southwest of Trinkitat.
