Do Not be Deceived by This Humbug Illustrated Paper.
An agent for the New York Graphic is in the city endeavoring to humbug our business men into purchasing a large edition of that sheet, which is to illustrate St. Paul and publish a written description of the city. There are several reasons why our people should not waste their money upon this affair.
In the first place the patent cheap lithography which the Graphic uses is an abortion and produces an illustration rough and hideous in its unsightliness.
In the second place the agent visited Minneapolis in time to illustrate their fair in a cheap and uncouth way, and the paper has been circulated as a fair advertisement. It is too late to make any such issue available for the State fair at St. Paul even if it was desirable.
In the third place the Minneapolis edition was accompanied with such a glowing 'description' of that city as to leave nothing to be said in behalf of St. Paul in the Graphic. We have no fault to find with this whatever, so long as the catch penny affair did not attempt to perpetrate a swindle here. That paper cannot now say anything good of St. Paul without deliberately repudiating what it has said for Minneapolis.
The proper way is to allow Minneapolis to have the benefit of her advertisement unmolested and for St. Paul to decline to have anything to do with the cheap and nasty second-hand wares which are offered. It is unjust to Minneapolis and dishonest and indecent on the part of the Graphic after having taken the money from our sister city, to destroy what good, if any, it has done them, by coming to St. Paul and making it the great city of this region. Minneapolis has, unfortunately been caught by the swindle, but St. Paul can profit by the sad experience of her neighbor and avoid the humbug. The really proper way would have been for both cities to have agreed that they would not countenance the fraud, which savors more strongly of blackmail than legitimate business enterprise.
