Full Text

We counted forty-four steamboats lying at the wharf yesterday morning, the greater portion of them receiving or discharging cargoes. Our wharf is nearly a mile in length, but still it is too short to accommodate the boats that are daily arriving—a number have to lie outside for the want of room; the arrivals often number twenty in one day; and while the improvement of the landing is going on, would it not be well enough to look a little to the length, for the space at present allotted, and which constitutes the entire and only wharf at which steamboats can land in front of the city, is from the intersection of Chestnut on the south to the lumber yards above Oak on the north—this space yesterday was completely filled up, and the number of boats are two or three tiers deep. Whether the steamboat landing can be extended at present or not, we do not know; but one thing is certain, it will have to be done and that at no very distant day.—St. Louis New Era.
