"I am pleased with the decided stand you have taken on the important subject which now agitates these once happy United States, there are many friends of the Administration in Tennessee; they are strong enough I hope in some of the Districts, to prove successful. The course pursued by the Opposition is unexampled. Could I see my mother State (Virginia) under the influence of correct judgment, I should consider all safe—But he who is at the helm of universal nature, will direct all things by his infinite wisdom. I hope our national sins though great may not yet draw down upon us the wrath of Heaven."
