Nation's Enemies Of Constitutional Government Headed For Tough Sledding

Herman Talmadge seeks to carry his fight for segregation and constitutional government to the City of Washington.

And for that reason he has declared himself a candidate for the United States Senate.

"There is where the fight is. There is where we need the fighters," said Talmadge in his official announcement.

"Never before in the history of this state has the need been so great for representation in the Congress of this country by men who will stand like the Rock of Ages for right and justice and against tyranny and ruthless usurpation of power," he continued.

On National Level

Herman Talmadge will get the opportunity to wage the fight on the national level. He can't be stopped now.

The NAACP and the CIO do not have enough money or enough funds to keep him from being in the Senate come January 1957.

In seeking to be the champion of the people of Georgia in the Nation's capital, Talmadge in his opening statement said:

"Last December I promised that I would have a statement in the spring regarding my future political plans. In accordance with that promise and in compliance with the expressed wishes of thousands of friends in every walk of life in Georgia, I herewith announce my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for United States Senator in the forthcoming September 12th Democratic Primary.

"Senator George's announcement that he has decided to retire at the expiration of his present term means the culmination of a long and honorable career.

Distinguished Record

"He has made a marked and distinguished record of service to his State and nation. He has earned the esteem and respect of the people of Georgia, the country and the free world.

"If I am fortunate enough to be elected to the United States Senate, it shall be my purpose to seek the advice and wise counsel of Senator George often.

"As Governor of Georgia for more than six years, as Chairman of the Georgia Delegation to the 1952 Democratic National Convention, and as a private citizen, I have vigorously resisted with every resource at my command the determined efforts being made to destroy constitutional government, states' rights and local self-determination in this Nation. It has been impressed upon me that these forces seeking to undermine our state and local governments and Southern way of life are operating on a nationwide scale
