Thursday, December 7th 1802.
A motion was made that the house should proceed to the appointment of a chaplain, when the previous question whether a chaplain should be appointed at all, was called for; which passed in the affirmative.
On the motion of Mr. Barbour, seconded by Mr. Booker, Ordered, That the ayes and noes on the foregoing question be inserted in the journal.
The names of those who voted in the affirmative are--Messrs. Finnie, Cabell, Camm, Andrew Anderson, Doake, J. Brown, Leftwich, James Stephenson, M'Ferran, Young, W. Brown, Jones, Clarke, Warren, Hatcher, Roberts, Booker, Holmes, Cavendish, Mathews, Dupree, Mason, Blair, Dickey, Terry, Trueheart, Prunty, Storrs, L. Johnson, Eley, Crare, Manning, Lightfoot, L. Smith, M'Kee, Aylett, Gregory, Rozzel, Niblett, Neil, Taylor, R. L. Daniel, Muse, John Craig, Woodward, L. The house then proceeded to ballot for a chaplain, and the members having prepared tickets with the name of the person to be ballotted for, and deposited the same in the ballot boxes, Messrs. J. W. Eppes, Barbour, Adams, Tate, and Holmes, were appointed a committee to examine the ballots and report to the house on whom a majority should fall.
Resolved, therefore, That the Rev. John Courtney be appointed Chaplain to this house, and that he attend to read prayers every morning at the hour appointed by the standing order of the house.
Ordered, That the clerk acquaint the senate therewith.
