Full Text

A Riddle. -It is confidently reported in Charleston and in Savannah, that Gen. Matthews in the character of agent of Government, took up from a Bank in Charleston and from the Collector in Savannah, by order of Government, One hundred thousand dollars ; which money he employed in raising troops or bribing a mob for the purpose of taking Amelia-Island from the Spaniards. That he received the money is admitted, and that he publicly asserted wherever he went, that the money was to be employed by order of Government in bribing volunteers to seize the Island is also admitted. It has lately been asserted, that the Governor of Georgia, by order of our President, disavows any agency of Government in taking Amelia Island; and that he has orders from the President to restore it to the Spaniards. Let any man less sagacious than Oedipus solve the above riddle if he can, remembering that our executive is very correct and honourable
