Career Of Joe Schenck Is Alger Tale
By Leon Gutterman
(Copyright, 1949, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)
HOLLYWOOD The popular conception of a top film studio executive in the motion picture industry is that of a man who lolls in an immense plush-lined office, listening to yes-men lull him into a sense of security with such lullaby words as "colossal," "stupendous," and the sibilant keyword. "yes."
To be more specific, the career and ability of Joseph M. Schenck, executive production head and chairman of the board of 20th Century-Fox studio, are a direct contradiction of the perfumed burlesque of movie executives.
His life story contains all of the elements that would make a Horatio Alger story . . . early struggle, constant hard work, thrift and a kindly feeling to all of his fellow men. To make him a hero of more up-to-date literature are added the traits of a vision, ingenuity, daring and a genius for leadership.
Stirring and dramatic is the success story of Joseph M. Schenck. It recites the early struggles of a poor boy who came to the United States when he was 10 years old to lift himself with unfaltering steps, rung by rung, up the ladder of success, at the top to find himself one of the dominating figures in the world's greatest entertainment industry.
