This marks the first use of public housing for this purpose in either Puerto Rico or the mainland United States, according to Jose Serrano, design engineer of the project.
Old people constitute an increasing proportion of the population, and the project is designed to meet the growing need for decent living facilities for those whose children have grown up and whose earning capacities are greatly curtailed. Large-scale housing developments in both P.R. and the United States, generally are designed for family occupancy.
The Puerto Rico Housing Authority recognised this short coming in previous programs & is now embarking on a new phase to remedy the situation. The pilot project, at Anasco, on the west coast, is composed of two buildings, with six apartments in one and four in the other. All are at ground level to eliminate stairs. Each apartment has living bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.
Similar but larger projects are planned for San Jose and Carolina.
There will be 48 units at San Jose. Carolina will have 16 units. Still other projects are proposed for the future.
