The Election. On Monday the Polls were opened at the Court house. and the several Precincts, in this county. for two Delegates and a Senator. in the next General Assembly. Candidates : Dr. C. Cocke for the Senate—T. W. Gilmer, R. W. Wood. T. J. Randolph & H. Nelson, Esqs. for Assembly.

Thus there were four Richmonds in the field to contest the post of Delegates. Two had been in training several weeks—one brought forward a few days ago, and the other entered on the morning of the struggle that tried their pretensions to popular favor. It lasted three days—one heat each day. The first and second heat didn't excite more than usual interest: but towards the close of the third day expectation ran high, and we heard 3 to 1 offered, which was quickly withdrawn on hearing the news from Maupin town; and when the report was circulated that the famous "ragged mountain" had disgorged, and was pouring out its hosts of new fledged freemen, the men for Wood looked rather dumpish. This heat was well contested—the following is the manner in which they came out ; Gilmer ahead, with great ease, not having been pushed from the word "go," 767; Wood next, smartly jaded, but proved good bottom, 360; Randolph hard on his flanks, very fleet, having lost a good deal in the start, 292; and Nelson last, rather fatigued, not having been brought forward in sufficient time for training, 210. It is expected at the next trial of speed and bottom the result will be somewhat different.

No one entered against Dr. Cocke, in a regular way, who gained the goal with a vote of upwards of 750.

It is due to Capt. Randolph to say that he disclaimed being a candidate on the stand, and retired, but returned at the pressing solicitation of his friends.
