ON THE DEATH Of GENERAL WOLFE.

BRITANNIA mourn! Great WOLFE in Arms no more,
To grace thy Legions, and defend thy Shore,
Whose thundering Cannon, Desolation spread;
And Martial Skill, combined Armies Dread,
His ardent Breast So well prepar'd to feel,
The rapid Bullet and the pointed Steel:
To force Entrenchments with few Britons dare,
And 'midt superior Numbers mingle War,
Severe his Fate, and pity'twas so nigh,
That So much Valour was So soon to Die,
Had he surviv'd what his great Arms hath won,
O'er France would shudder, as New France hath done.
In burning Ruins her best Cities laid!
And flashing Frenchmen quite forgot Parade,
While Scenes of Horror struck a pannick Dread,
Him Fame shall Trumpet, and all Europe ring.
And Jove's high Bird shall bear him on her Wing;
As Prussia's Hero Spread his Fame so far,
Or Marlborough Great, that would have finish'd War.
