What is this article about?

Letters from Paris indicate that the Earl of Waldegrave urged the French court to release a captured English merchant ship. France responded that the seizure was reprisal for the Governor of Antigua's unjust confiscation of a French merchantman, and the English ship would be freed upon release of the French vessel and British disavowal of the governor's actions.

Full Text

Letters from Paris say, that the Earl of Waldegrave having made strong Representations to the Court of France, in order to obtain the Release of an English Ship, richly laden, which was lately taken by the French, was answered at Versailles, That seeing the Governor of Antigua had taken and confiscated, against all manner of Right, a French Merchant-man, passing by that Island in its way from the French Islands, it was but just that Reprisals should be made as soon as an Opportunity offered; but that nevertheless, as soon as the French Ship, with its Cargo, should be released, and that the King of Great Britain should disavow the Conduct of the Governor of Antigua, the English Ship should in like manner be set at Liberty.
