Sugar Crops.—It is said, that our Louisiana lands already produce for us one quarter part of our whole consumption of Muscovado sugar, besides a considerable proportion of the molasses we use in substance for sweetening. It is much to be wished, that the raising of sugar, by free white men, could be fairly tried, in order to diminish the supposed necessity for slaves: a large proportion of our cotton is raised by white families, more than our own consumption yet requires.
