Another Victim.—Yesterday morning a man by the name of N. P. Holmes, a shoemaker by trade, and known in our town as a good workman when kept from liquor, went on foot to Port Kent, in company with a Frenchman named Little, after Rum for himself and other parties in Burlington. They procured their liquor at Rice's in Port Kent and with it, in three large jugs on a hand sled, set out on their return about 1 o'clock P. M. They drank before starting, and afterwards on the ice. The snow falling fast made hard traveling, and when about three miles from shore Holmes, overcome by liquor and exhaustion, gave out, and his companion, who was not so drunk, after vainly endeavoring to urge him on, left him and made his way to the shore alone. He reached a house on Water street about midnight, much exhausted. An attempt was made to rescue Holmes, but in the darkness and storm it was impossible to do anything, and the search was abandoned. His frozen corpse was found by the stage coming from the other side this morning, lying face upwards and covered with snow, by the side of the sled with its load of poison. The corpse, sled and jugs were brought to Burlington by the stage, an inquest held upon the body, and a verdict rendered in accordance with the above facts. Holmes was about 35 years old, and leaves a wife and four children.

It is to be hoped that our neighboring State will not long delay to put a check, by prohibitory law, upon the making of widows and orphans in Vermont by New York liquor.—Burlington Free Press, 27th ult.
