A LUCRATIVE PROFESSION.

It affords us sincere pleasure to hear of the estimation in which the school for Civil Engineers, connected with The Georgetown College, Ky. is held by the Scientific men of our country. The Professor of this School, who was educated at West Point and seems to know very well what he is about, was smartly jeered for stating in his Prospectus, that a young man of skill and energy could command $1200 per annum as an Engineer. Now for the facts to sustain him. The second-session of the School ended about two weeks since. Ten young men have been qualified for the field. Three of these have already obtained situations upon salaries exceeding $1200!! Four others are employed for the present at the rate of $600 per annum, with the assurance that they shall be advanced as fast as their skill will justify it. The others not heard from. It is no child's play for a youth to be put on wages of $1200 or even $600, in a week after leaving school.

A young man well qualified in Mathematics can complete the course of Engineering in one session.

If any disposition of the "surplus revenue" be made by Congress, either in the way recommended by Mr. Grundy, Mr. Wright, or Mr. Clay, what a wide field will be opened for enterprising young men in the capacity of Engineers! But, even without it, we see the states unfolding resources heretofore hid, and applying them to this important object—each new work of Internal Improvement seems to develop in a progressive ratio the ability as well as the necessity of still greater improvement, and consequently an equal demand for persons to superintend their construction.

When boarding can be had for $2 25 to 2 50 per week in this place, we cannot conceive why so many young men avail themselves of the advantage of this school. The summer session has just commenced, and we hope to see many young men from all parts of the country. Our College besides is fully organized, having a Professor of Ancient Languages, one of Modern Languages, one of Metaphysics and Belles-Lettres, one of Mathematics, &c., and one of Civil Engineering, &c. —with a fine Philosophical and Chemical Apparatus. Library, &c. &c. What institution in the West presents greater advantages to the young men of the Mississippi valley? Sentinel.
