Artemus Ward-His Book.
Carleton, New York, has just brought
out an illustrated edition of the writings of
the celebrated Artemus Ward. The Home
Journal says the book has the merit of
making one laugh in spite of himself.-
Here is a sketch of a "strong-minded" fe-
male:
"From Detroit I go West'ard hoe. On
the cars was a he-lookin' female, with a green
cotton umbreller in one hand an' a ban'ful
o' Reform tracks in the other. She said
every woman should have a Spear. Them
as didn't demand their Spears, didn't no
what was good for 'em. What is my
Spear?' she asked, addressin' the peepel
in the cars. Is it to stay at home & darn
stockin's and be the ser-lave uf a domineer.
in'man? Or is it my Spear to vote &
speak & show miself the ekal to man? Is
there a sister in this keer what has her
proper Spear?' Sayin' which the ekkentric
femail whirled her umbreller round sevril
times, & finally jobbed me in the weskit
with it.
" ·I have no objecshuns to yure goin' in-
to the Spear bizness,' sez I, 'but you'll
plese remember I aint a pickeril. Don't
Spear me agin, if you plese.' She sot
down."
