CITY FOUNDING DATE UNCERTAIN
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) They're going ahead with plans for Carbondale's centennial celebration this year although there's some question whether this Southern Illinois city was founded 100 years ago.
Records show the site was picked in 1852, the first house was built, first sermon preached and first business set up. It was 1856 before the city was organized, '69 before it got its special charter, and '73 before it was brought under the Illinois City and Villages Act of 1870.
