WARNING NOTES
Wants Aid of Public Schools
in Opposing Public Ownership
of the Railroads
TRENTON.
Sept. 24: Former Governor E. C. Stokes, president of
Mechanics National Bank of Trenton,
and chairman of the Republican
State Committee, today requested
State Education Commissioner John
Enright to enlist the aid of the public
schools in the campaign against
public ownership of railroads, as advocated by United States Senator
Robert M. LaFollette in the latter's
quest for the presidency.
Mr. Stokes cited statistics to show
that railroad systems in New Jersey
contribute some $15,000,000 in taxes
annually for the support of the public school system. Government ownership, he declares, would deprive
the state of this revenue and also
place $256,728,513 of taxable railroad ratables on the exempt list.
Such a condition warrants the
State Board of Education in calling
the attention of teachers and local
boards of education to the "menace
that threatens them from government
owned railroads," said Mr. Stokes.
