Benefit Organ Concert At Methodist Church Sunday, October 4

As a first step in a campaign to purchase a Baldwin Organ in use at the Methodist Church of Browning, a concert will be presented by the organist, Mr. Don Schmidt, on Sunday, October 4th, at five o'clock in the afternoon.

The purpose of the concert is to present to the public music written for organ as an instrument used in divine worship. The program will be of a nondevotional nature in order that any interested parties from other churches in the community may feel free to attend.

The organ, as such, is one of the most ancient of instruments having been used in a primitive form by the ancient Romans during the barbaric games in the Colosseum. The early Christian Church adopted the organ for use with their group singing, which played such a large part in the worship of the early Church. The Catholic Church employed organs from that time until the present, contributing the greatest share to the music and development of the instrument. As protestant churches came into being they, too, made use of organs in their services, the Lutherans making the greatest contribution to organ literature in the music of John Sebastian Bach.

As the possibilities of the organ were expanded concert halls, auditoriums, and later even theaters adopted them, spending in some cases more than one hundred thousand dollars for single large installations.

The small church, in remote areas, still had the old problem of cost and repair to contend with until the present development of the modern electronic organ, which has placed an instrument of full tonal resources within reach of such groups at moderate cost and negligible upkeep.

The program to be presented Sunday afternoon will be as follows:

I. Concert Variations in E Minor--Bennett.

II. Sonata, Chambered Nautilus by Stewart: a. Allegro Moderato; b. Andante; c. Allegretto Scherzando; d. Allegro Maestoso.

III. Toccata and Fugue D Minor by J. S. Bach. Canzona in D Minor, by Bach. Chorale Preludes 33 and 36, by Bach. Prelude and Fugue F Major (Little), by Bach.

IV. a. Japanese Sunset, Deppen; b. Pale Moon, Logan; c. Serenade (Student Prince), Friml.

V. Concert Paraphrase Eine Feste Burg, Faulkes.
