SPEAKER BROWN RENEWS HIS ATTACKS ON SMITH AND DIAL, WAR DEBTS DISCUSSED BY DIAL
Darlington, June 18.—(By the Associated Press)—Candidates for the senatorial nomination displayed their wares today before the voters of Darlington county, and each of the trio of aspirants made his plea for support, following pretty well the lines he had laid down in the first three days of speechmaking. An audience that filled the local courtroom to perhaps three-quarters of its capacity gave the speakers respectful attention, but without any demonstration.

Former Senator Dial declared he believed this country should make its foreign debtors pay up in order that taxes on American citizens might be greatly reduced, and advocated a policy of working for the peace and prosperity of the entire nation.

An alleged street rumor that he was a "liquor head" was denounced by Speaker Brown, who characterized the originator as a "dirty skunk." The speaker again turned his batteries of ridicule and sarcasm upon Senator Smith, criticizing him for his votes in the Brookhart election question and in favor of American entry into the World court.

"No criticism of me, no criticism of any man is a standard by which you should judge another's fitness for office," Senator Smith told the voters.

The question for you to determine is: 'What can he do? What does he propose to do?'"

Senator Smith, pointing to his nearly 18 years of service, declared "seniority with ability, spells more than any other force" in defining the value of a senator. He said he was senior Democratic member on several of the most important senate committees.

In his assault upon Smith's record, the Barnwell candidate asserted "Smith has done more harm by his false prophecy and his false leadership for the farmer than the boll weevil has ever done."

Reminding his hearers that he voted against the proposed American mandate for Armenia, Mr. Dial said, "We want no foreign entanglements."

He declared the farmer of the West and the farmers of the South could not get together on any such thing as the proposed in the Haugen bill but added that they might be able to combine to remove the tariff and thus all of them get the benefit of a saving in the cost of things they buy.

The need of the times is "safe and sane legislation," he went on.

Speaker Brown again called attention to the fact that Senator Smith is a cousin of Governor McLeod, with whose election, he asserted "high taxes and hard times began in South Carolina, and B. F. McLeod, general manager of the Cotton Growers Cooperative as an illustration. He declared that 5% of the price of every bale of cotton goes to support B. F. McLeod and the association.

Senator Smith, as at Marion yesterday, appealed to the voters to consider the grave conditions now facing the world and realize their own responsibility in the government.

Giving an account of his service: he said: "I have fought the fight of the people. I have kept the faith, and, thank God, I'm still a Jeffersonian Democrat."

The last meeting of the week will be held at Bishopville tomorrow morning, with the opening set for 10 o'clock. The first meeting of next week will be held in Charleston Tuesday night.
