Examination of Teachers.

The examination of teachers for the ensuing year was had at the City Buildings on Thursday. The applications of seventy teachers, including those who had certificates renewed, were disposed of. In these examinations questions are submitted in writing by the Examining committee, and answers are required in writing, a few minutes being given for the same. No consultation between the applicants is permitted, and as soon as one party has written the answers to the several questions, they are taken in charge by the City Superintendent. The Examining committee consists of Rev. J. T. McClure, Dr. Todd, and Superintendent F. S. Williams. There is no disposition on the part of the Examining committee to submit puzzling questions. Ten leading questions are propounded upon each branch of study.

The following questions, on the subject of Chemistry, may be taken as a fair sample:

1. What is the province of Chemistry?

2. How do organic and inorganic chemistry differ?

3. What is chemical affinity?

4. State the difference between chemical combination and mechanical mixture.

5. Is atmospheric air a chemical compound? What is its composition?

6. State the law of definite proportions. Of multiple proportions.

7. State the atomic theory. By whom was it proposed?

8. What is a salt?

9. Give the chemical name and composition of Epsom salts. Of Glauber's Salt. Of common salt.

10. What fermentation takes place in bread-making, and what change in the character of the fermentation if it proceed too far:

We desire to call the especial attention of our readers—more particularly the bachelor portion—to the tenth and last question above given, in relation to the bread-making arrangement. We wish to distinctly state that out of seventy teachers, all answered the question correctly, with the exception of one young lady, and we have no doubt she has learned the secret by this time. Any gentleman contemplating mur— we mean matrimony, who desires a wife who understands the art of bread-making, should immediately commence paying his addresses to some one of our city school teachers—always excepting the one who knew nothing about the matter.
