Full Text

The Bank Bill.—We regret that we have not space for a more full report of the proceedings in the legislature on the bank bill. The whigs vote down every proposition with a view to the security of the People, offered by the democrats. Some of the friends of the bill have had the boldness to admit that restraints were impracticable and useless—leaving us to draw the common sense inference that the banks under this bill will obey no law except such as are prompted by their own selfishness and rapacity. Well—the more outrageous, the worse the bill,—the better. We have all along prayed that if they were to pass a bank scheme, that it would be one of such hideous features, that the people would be immediately aroused to a sense of their danger, and demand its repeal. Our hopes are realized. The intellectual and patriotic spirit of the people will now be brought to a test. If they are worthy of freedom, they will choose a legislature next year which will repeal the iniquitous law. If they are worthy of chains, they will let the law stand.

P. S. The bill passed the House, on the 11th inst. Now let every freeman array himself under the banner of "REPEAL." Let the issue be made now, while the power is yet in the hands of the People. The Democracy of Putnam are fully aroused, as will be seen by the call for a repeal meeting, published in another column. We shall publish the remainder of the signatures to the call in our next.
