end that while these Indians are traveling out of classes, the great American people may not slip back into them. And you arise and wander back to your hotel, confident that the United States will go on to higher and yet higher grounds of individual liberty and equality, glorying that you are an American, happy in remembering our great jealous political organizations, our fraternal organizations, our lodges, our clubs, our newspapers, our churches, our schools. On the way to the hotel, in a splendid home, twinkling from the portico is a tiny red light, burning there to drive the evil spirits away, the evil spirits that our civilization has long since exorcised. And in front of the hotel, where a new cement walk is being laid there sleep among the barrels and spades, on the street, the men who are making it.
