Silver Now Sterilizes

An electrical process for sterilizing water in swimming pools is described in the Lancet, says the London Daily Mail.

The method is of special interest because it depends on the sterilizing action of minute quantities of silver which are liberated into the water. As the water flows to the pool from the filtration plant, it is explained, a portion of it is passed through a small electric current between two silver plates. Traces of silver leave the surface of the plate which carries a positive electrical charge.

At intervals determined by an electric clock the direction of the current is reversed so that silver is liberated from the opposite plate. In this way the silver waste is distributed equally.

For some chemical reason by no means understood, the silver introduced into the water in this way possesses a remarkably high sterilizing power provided that the water is fairly free from organic matter other than bacteria.

A particular advantage is that no smell is imparted to the water, which retains this sterilizing power for some time and exerts a powerful inhibitive effect on the green growth which so often spoils the appearance of swimming pool water.
