Saturday, April 2, 1803.
Wednesday, the 20th day of the present month, is assigned by law for the choice of Representatives to it in May and June elections of the General Assembly, and to vote for General Officers for the year ensuing.
Those who have hitherto espoused the cause of Republicanism, and who are principled in support of it, will call to mind that the enemy are at the gates, and ready to take possession of the ground, not merely by falsehood, fraud, and stratagem; but by terror and violence. Every repulse seems to stimulate them with new energies, and to bring forth fresh measures of opposition, and unheard of depravity. Letters from respectable citizens in different, and distant parts of the State, inform us of enormous bundles of the Newport Mercury, and other federal papers, being circulated free of expense--and that this paper (the Rhode-Island Republican) seldom reaches its destination, being, as it is reasonable to suppose, intercepted and suppressed by the immaculate managers of federalism.--
These early symptoms indicate a deep, sullen, and desperate opposition on their part, at the approaching election. It is time, therefore, for Republicans to awake; to "gird up their loins," and stand upon their guard.
