players engaged each other on the first two rounds of match play today.
the 22nd P.G.A. tournament was developing into a battle of law rather
than putts and drives. birdies and eagles.
The tournament was split into two camps-those who believed Den-
ny Shute, 1936 and 1937 winner.
should play today and who did
something about it; and those who
ruled that under PGA constitution
and by-laws Shute was an ineligible
starter. that the tournament now
is an illegal one.
Last week Shute was ruled ineli-
gible because he was two days late
paying his association dues. The
situation came to a brief head be-
fore the first qualifying round on
Sunday when 50 players signed a
petition saying they would not play
if the executive committee of the
PGA stood on a previous ruling and
continued to bar Shute.
The committee relented and let
Shute play in the qualifying rounds
but "reserved decision." Last night.
after Shute had won one of the 46
places available
for today's play.

long huddle and Walsh announced:
"Shute will not play." The other
six members of the committee vot-
ed by wire and it was understood
the balloting was 8 to 3 against
Shute. with Dudley and Jacobus
voting for Shute to continue in the
tournament.
Jacobus overruled the executive
committee and said: "Shute will
play for the good of the PGA and
golf in general. Ill take a chance
on over-ruling the committee."
