There was an impression outside of the State among those not fully informed and who read only papers that were criminally or maliciously ignorant of what the real facts are, that Taylor is a much persecuted man and that he has suffered not a little for the great principle of "civil liberty" as construed by certain republican peanut politicians. This sentiment has undergone a change, which is evidenced by the press all over the country: and which is aptly expressed in Bryan's Commoner:
The testimony of Gov. Bradley, taken in connection with the other circumstances in the case, makes it very clear that Taylor was aware of the plot to assassinate Goebel. It will shock the public at large to know that there is conclusive testimony connecting the executive of a State with a scheme to assassinate his political rival. So long as there was no positive proof, the friends of Taylor might excuse themselves for refusing to believe him guilty, but in the presence of such testimony as that furnished by Gov. Bradley, and corroborated by Judge Yost, even the most extreme partisans of Taylor will be silenced.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal, which pretends to be democratic, plays for applause from assassination presses and the groundlings by constant flings at Judge Cantrill. Its latest contribution to the liar's column is: "The rule in Judge Cantrill's court seems to be this: If you were in Frankfort when Goebel was killed, you are guilty; if you were not in Frankfort when Goebel was killed, you absented yourself because you were guilty." A paper that originates such rot is meaner than the Louisville Post. Comparison could go no further.
General Simon Bolivar Buckner is reported as having stated that it was money, not evidence, that convicted the persons who conspired to kill Gov. Goebel.-Lexington Democrat. We hope the old man did not say it. His course in the last few years has alienated him from nearly all his former friends and such a remark as the above would damn him till he is deader than ever in the estimation of those whose opinions are worth considering.
Up in Jackson county, where the democrats have no more show than an icicle in hades, they held a primary Saturday which is described as not only hot, but bitter. A full ticket was nominated and there will be as hard a fight as if the democrats were not confronted with an adverse majority of over 1,000. But that's the way to do. Contest every inch of ground and let the republicans get nothing they are not fully entitled to.
The commissioners who selected the location and superintended the erection of the Eddyville penitentiary have at last got a verdict of $3,000 each for their services, Judge Cantrill's court awarding it Friday. They ought instead to have gotten an indeterminate sentence in the institution, for locating it where they did.
It is given out that Gov. Bradley will enter the race for U. S. Senator. As between him and Deboe, it will be Bradley first, the 250 pounds of salt pork, as the misfit Senator is familiarly called, nowhere. The one has brains and the other bowels only.
For seven long weeks President McKinley will earn his $50,000-a-year salary traveling over the great West seeing the sights. Much sympathy is felt for these poor, overworked potentates.
Col. Breckinridge gives Turncoat Sharp a certificate of good character and Steve can doubtless give Turncoat Billy a similar certificate. Par nobile fratrum.
The Louisville Post complains that Powers and Howard sleep in the cage with the Negroes in the Frankfort jail. That is bad on the Negroes.
Editor Rosewater, of Omaha, says that Mr. Bryan will be a candidate for governor of Nebraska next year.
