July 23. A Messenger, who is arrived at Whitehall, brings an Account, that the Regiment of Royal Hunters. which His Majesty had raised in his Electoral Dominions, had struck such Terror into the French Army, that their Parties fly before them wherever they appear. These Hunters are composed of Gentlemens Game Keepers, who are trained up to Shooting, from Ten Years old; and are such dextrous Marksmen, that they will shoot a single Ball thro' a Butt no bigger than the Crown of a Man's Hat, at 200 Yards Distance. A Party of these Hunters came up, with about 150 French Horse, and almost in an Instant, they levelled every Man of them with the Ground. They are all cloathed in Green, have each a rifled barrel Gun, two Pistols in Holsters, two in their Girdles, besides a short Dagger, and a Broad Sword ; and are supposed equal to the same Number of any Troops in the World. It is said that M.d Estrees has made Representations to the Duke of Cumberland, against this Regiment as Murderers; their Method of Fighting, being contrary to the Rules of War. It is the Opinion however, of Grotius, that Invaders may be repelled by every Means the Invaded have in their Power.

Event Details

The Regiment of Royal Hunters, raised by His Majesty in his Electoral Dominions, terrifies the French Army, causing their parties to flee. Composed of gentlemen's game keepers trained from age ten, they are expert marksmen capable of hitting a small target at 200 yards. A party engaged and instantly killed 150 French horsemen. Clothed in green with rifled guns, multiple pistols, dagger, and broadsword, they are deemed equal to any troops. M.d Estrees complained to the Duke of Cumberland calling them murderers for fighting contrary to war rules, but Grotius opines invaders may be repelled by any means.
