Youth Citizenship Week
Atlanta will make its official bow to Youth Citizenship
Week this morning at noon, when the young people will be
featured in a broadcast with an all-Negro cast in the show:
titled "Rising to Greater Heights in Citizenship." That sub-
ject is also the central theme of the week. Citizenship Week
is sponsored by the Butler Street YMCA, the YWCA, the
several housing projects and the churches and schools.
On Sunday afternoon at four thirty, there will be a Youth
Rally at the Greater Wheat Street Baptist Church to be ad-
dressed by two of America's great spirits and acknowledged
spokesmen for youth. The first part of the program will be
given over to an address by
Dr. William Lloyd Imes, Presi-
dent of Knoxville College; while the remaining portion of
the hour will be devoted to a message from Dean Raimundo
de Ovies of the Cathedral of St. Philip.
It is altogether unnecessary to direct attention to this splen-
did array of talent and sound motivation found in messages
from these notables. It is significant though, that we em-
phasize with all of our resources the vital meaning of
Youth Citizenship Week. We do not think any parent in At-
lanta could well afford to miss a single feature of the week's
entertainment. The Youth Institute on Monday night at the
Butler Street Y appears to be perhaps the focal point
around which revolve activities of the entire week. There
the youth will be encouraged to face up to and discuss
frankly the problems which concern them. From this round-
table of views they will undertake to arrive at solutions and
lines of action.
There is something specific and definite which Atlanta's
youth can make of Citizenship Week. Not only can they
stimulate and accelerate positive effort on their part, but
they can also point the way for greater action on the part
of their parents. They of course, will be interested vitally
in the matter of vote registration among them. And through
them some of our less active parents may be constrained to
register.
Let Atlanta give its full moral and spiritual support to
Youth Citizenship Week. If we could have our way, we would
suggest that the week be changed to simply Citizenship
Week. The youth have every claim upon the time and talent
of all of us.
