"I find you are not the warriors I took you for ; you have made peace with the French, who are your mortal enemies, and more inveterate then the alligator to the Indian.--You have fought seven years, and given back the fruits of your conquests, Ah, brother ! these things undo you in the minds of Indians.-They will conceive you did this thro' fear, and the French will make them believe it. They will deceive and cheat you ; they will appear weak, dispirited and subdued, till they obtain their purpose. They are treacherous and perfidious'; they deceive, and they betray. Their cunning, which they practice to your disadvantage, is more than you can conceive, and none but the great Sachem beyond the clouds, can comprehend. How then could you rush into a peace with them, whose interest it is to deceive and destroy you ? There are not wanting those of your enemies, who daily represent you among the several nations of Indians, in the worst point of view ; and your behaviour makes them believe it. Take up the war-hatchet then and shew us you are Englishmen, for we doubt it much."
