The Census.
The census returns are now so nearly complete that the number and distribution of the population can be pretty accurately stated. The subjoined table exhibits the enumeration of 1860 and 1870, together with the growth of the different sections of the country:
Total 31,133,995 38,281,394
If the foregoing is an accurate statement—and very likely it is not far out of the way—the population falls between one and two millions short of the estimates of our best statisticians. Nevertheless the increase has been something more than twenty-two per cent. for the whole country. The increase for the Western States—Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska—has been 892,253 more than for all the other states of the Union. The ratio per cent. of increase for those states has been about 44 per cent.
In case the number of representatives in Congress should be increased to 300, as it probably will, the number of people entitled to one representative will be 127,604—about the same as at present—and Wisconsin will have about 33,000 more than enough inhabitants to entitle her to eight representatives.—Mil. Sentinel.
Wyoming Territory, by the corrected census returns has 9,115 population, exclusive of Indians; and Dakota, 14,021.
