Spray 208 Rockets
On Palmdale, Cal.
PALMDALE, Calif. ( - Civil and military authorities plan an investigation of a "dogfight" between two Air Force jets and a drone plane that showered the Palmdale area with 208 rockets Thursday.
Rocket fragments blasted into an automobile and buildings and caused a string of fires in the San Gabriel Mountains. No injuries were reported and one fire, on the slopes of Mount Gleason, was brought under control Friday night after burning 350 acres.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Roger Jessup said he will introduce a resolution Tuesday warning that the county "would not stand idly by and see its citizens brought under bombardment." He termed the episode "gross carelessness."
The Air Force, however, defended the pilots of the two F-89 Scorpions that loosed the rockets in an attempt to shoot down the prop-driven F6F Hellcat that had strayed from its radio-controlled path. The plane finally ran out of gas and crashed in a nearby field.
"The pilots did well under the circumstances," said Col. Edwin P. Carey, commander of the Oxnard Air Force Base which sent the jets aloft. He said one pilot scored a hit on the drone and the other had a probable hit.
