Can Never Find The
Money For This Road
Once every few months the Pasquotank Highway Commission pulls long faces and deplores the fact that it can't find funds to improve a half mile of road leading from the city limits to the State Normal School.
The State of North Carolina has spent a half million dollars for a school plant here to train teachers for its colored schools: the State Normal releases upwards of $100,000 annually in local channels of trade and is as big an asset to the city, commercially, as a factory with 100 men on its pay roll. For years the State has insisted upon the county showing proper regards for its investment here by providing a good road to the property. The highway commissioners apologize to the State from time to time and promise to do something as soon as they can get the money.
But when they have the money the Commissioners conveniently forget about the road to the State Normal. This week the Commissioners were informed by the County Auditor that they had not reached their budget for 1927-28 by nearly $7,500.
The Commissioners were elated; they decided at once to buy a new tractor to cost $4,514.30 and a car load of galvanized pipe to cost $1,800 or more.
