COBBLE STONES FOR KING GEORGE ST.
Alderman McCullough presented a letter from Rear Admiral Ramsay, Chief of Bureau of Navigation, Navy Department, who stated that there would be no difficulty in paving the streets of Annapolis with material satisfactory to the city authorities within the limit of the appropriation if the city would furnish the curb.
Alderman McCullough then offered the following resolution :
WHEREAS: By an Act of Congress, $13,000 was appropriated to pave certain streets in the City of Annapolis, and after the bids were received and proved by the Secretary of the Navy for said paving, the amount was found to be insufficient to do work according to the specifications, and as there was only one bidder for Annapolis, George Jewell, Esq., within the limit of the appropriation to do all necessary work, including curb. the material proposed to be used, as per bid, is the best rubble stone on an eight inch sand foundation. If this proposition is approved by the Secretary of the Navy, it will be satisfactory to the city authorities, as it is the best paving they can get for that amount. Therefore be it Resolved, That the city authorities respectfully recommend the contract be awarded to George Jewell, Esq., and that Superintendent Cooper, of the Naval Academy is requested to forward this recommendation to the Navy Department, Washington, and the Clerk of the Council is hereby directed to furnish him with a copy of this resolution with bid attached.
Counsellor Riley offered a substitute for the resolution, to give the contract to B. L. Sweeton, of Camden. N. J., who agreed to pave the street with vitrified brick, laid in concrete, for the amount appropriated. In offering the substitute the Counsellor stated that he was in favor of having the work done by an Annapolis contractor, but he was for serving the interest of the city and tax-payer rather than that of one man. The substitute was lost by a vote of 6 to 2. Alderman McCullough's resolution was then adopted by a vote of 6 to 2.
