Full Text
Extract of a letter from a gentleman in the western parts of North-Carolina, to his friend in Virginia, dated Sept. 29, 1784.
"By accounts from the Natchez, the Spaniards are encroaching upon us, both as to territory, and seducing our Indians into alliances. I have not the same opinion of the enlightened policy of Spain as that of France: however I believe several of our accounts are exaggerated, coming from tories who are ever ready to embroil us to our hurt.
The last intelligence says, a body of Spaniards have taken post at the muscle-shoals, and are building a fort. The Chickamogga tribe have abandoned and burnt their towns, and moved off to some distant part--greatly disgusted with the attempts of individuals, and the state, to get their country without a purchase.
It is devoutly to be wished, that the powers of the union were strengthened, and the certain acts were deemed treason against the United States."
