The proceedings were opened with prayer by the Rev. Dr. Alexander. The Declaration of Independence was read by Cadet Powell of Amherst, who prefaced it with a short but appropriate address. The oration for the day, a production of uncommon merit. was delivered by Cadet Pitts of Essex.
The only speakers among the graduates were Cadet Campbell, of Bedford, who delivered the Salutatory, and Cadet Dorman, of Rockbridge, who delivered the Valedictory Address. The speeches of both these gentlemen, evinced a very high order of talent. They are both evidently young men of clear and vigorous intellect, and we trust their future course will reflect additional lustre upon the Institution from which they have just graduated with such distinguished honor.
Gov. McDowell, who was present, at the request of the Superintendent, then addressed the Graduates in a speech replete with valuable sentiments and advice, delivered in his usual eloquent, earnest and graceful manner. Degrees were then conferred upon thirteen young gentlemen.
The Lexington Volunteer Company united with the Cadets in the celebration of the day, and the Military procession was very fine and imposing. A notice of the Examinations, &c., at the Institute may be expected in our next.-Lexington Gazette.
