A gentleman, extremely well known in London, arrived in town on Wednesday from Ostend, and reports the following, which was communicated, as we have said, to the King at the Levee, in the following terms:
Gen. Wurmser had had a general engagement with the French near Manheim, and defeated them. The division under Gen. Jourdan having lost several of their magazines in their retreat across the Lahn, were reduced to very short allowance of provisions, and had scarcely had any time to eat for four days. Gen. Clairfayt being made acquainted with this distress, attacked Gen. Jourdan, and after a very obstinate engagement, completely defeated him, and drove his army across the Rhine, leaving behind them all their stores, cannon, and even muskets. Gen. Pichegru has likewise been attacked and defeated, and the whole of the French armies have repassed the Rhine with the loss of thirty-five thousand men!!
